A model portfolio is the first thing an agency, a casting director or a brand ever sees of you. It has to do a lot of work in a very short time: show what you look like honestly, show the range you can cover, and show that you are comfortable in front of a camera.
POP! Photography builds those portfolios for every age, from babies through to grown ups, in our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane studios. We have completed more than 20,000 photoshoots and hold over 570 five star Google reviews, and we shoot with the same direction and care whether you are three months old or thirty five.
The industry expects four kinds of images, and a folio that is missing one of them looks incomplete to anyone reading it professionally.
Most folios need somewhere between ten and twenty finished images to cover that spread properly. More than that and the weaker shots start dragging down the strong ones.
A portfolio is usually built from three kinds of photography. You can book them as part of a full folio session, or individually if you only need to top up one area.
The core folio work: commercial and editorial looks, full length and three quarter shots, multiple outfits and backdrops in one session.
Natural, character led images that show who you are rather than what you can sell. Useful for lifestyle and commercial casting.
Clean, tightly cropped and honest. The image an agency looks at first and the one most often requested on its own.
Every session runs the same way, whatever your age or experience.
Before the shoot. You get a preparation pack and styling guidance so you know what to bring and what to expect. Nobody arrives guessing.
Hair and makeup. Professional styling is included in the folio session, so the images are finished to industry standard rather than done at home.
On the day. A private session of around ninety minutes with up to four outfits and multiple backdrops. Our photographer directs the whole way through, which is the part that matters most if you have never modelled before. No experience is needed and we shoot beginners constantly.
Your reveal session. You view the images privately, online, with someone from our team walking you through which shots are working and why, before you choose your folio.
Our Love It Guarantee. If there are not at least three images you love at your reveal, we reshoot at no cost.
Photography studios almost never explain this, so here it is plainly.
There are two separate costs in a portfolio shoot anywhere in Australia. The first is the session fee, which pays for the studio, the photographer, the styling and the time. The second is the image package, which is what you pay for the finished, retouched photographs you actually keep. Some studios bundle the two into one headline price, others separate them. Neither is wrong, but comparing a session fee at one studio against an all inclusive price at another is how people end up surprised.
At POP the folio session is $195, which includes professional
hair and makeup, styling guidance, the preparation pack, on the
day coaching, the private reveal session and the Love It Guarantee. That booking also carries a $200 credit toward whatever folio package you choose. Folio packages start at $995 for five high resolution, professionally retouched images, so with the credit
applied that comes to $795.
There is no obligation to buy a package beyond the session, and we will tell you at the reveal if we think you only need a handful of images rather than the full set.
If you are new and want to try a studio session first, our $99 Signature Photoshoot is a shorter session without the folio styling. Prices are current at time of writing, so confirm when you book.
Worth being straight about this, because plenty of studios are not.
A portfolio does not get anyone signed. What it does is let an agency or a casting director assess you properly instead of guessing from a phone photo. A strong folio gets your application looked at seriously. It cannot promise anything past that, and any studio telling you otherwise is selling you something.
What agencies consistently want to see: current digitals that look like you today, one clean headshot, at least one full length image, and enough range across the other shots to show you can do more than one thing. For children, current means within the last several months. Beyond that, they are looking for someone who is easy to work with, which is exactly what a well directed session captures.
If you want the longer version, our guide to building a model portfolio walks through the whole process.
All folio sessions are shot in our own studios, with industry standard lighting, a range of backdrops and a private changing area.
Whether you are starting from nothing or replacing images that have dated, we will build you a folio that does its job.

Ten to twenty finished images is the usual range. Enough to show digitals, commercial, editorial and beauty, without padding it out with weaker shots. Agencies would rather see twelve strong images than thirty average ones.
No. Most people we shoot have never modelled before. Our photographers direct the entire session, including posing, expression and where to look, so you are never left to work it out yourself.
Two to four outfits covering different looks: something clean and simple for commercial, something with more personality for editorial, and a plain fitted top for digitals. You will get a preparation pack before the day with the full list.
Yes, professional hair and makeup styling is included in the folio session.
Digitals, or digis, are simple, natural images with minimal makeup against a plain background. They show what you look like right now with nothing added. Agencies ask for them constantly and most new models turn up without them, so yes, you need them.
For adults, roughly every twelve to eighteen months, or sooner if your look changes. For children it is much more often, because a child’s appearance dates a folio within months. Babies need updating soonest of all.
Yes. We shoot babies, children, teenagers and grown ups in the same studios, which is unusual. Each age is directed differently because each one needs different images.
No photography studio can promise that, and you should be cautious of any that suggests otherwise. A professional portfolio means your application gets assessed properly rather than dismissed, which is the part we can genuinely help with.
