You’ve got tabs open.
Three studios. Three price lists. Three portfolios full of beautiful photos — and somehow, they all start to blur together.
Here’s the thing: not all kids photoshoots are the same.
The real difference isn’t on the price list. It’s in how your child is treated on the day, how comfortable they feel in the room, what you actually walk away with, and whether the photos still mean something years from now.
Before you book anything (with us or anyone else), ask these seven questions.
1. How do you work with kids who won’t sit still?
Every child has an off day. Some feel shy. Some need time to warm up. Some would rather run around than sit and smile on cue.
At POP!, that’s exactly why our sessions are built around your child, not a script. We pace the shoot to their mood, give them time to warm up, and follow their energy instead of asking them to fit into ours. A kids photoshoot should never feel like forcing a child to perform.
2. What actually happens during the session?
Ask the studio to walk you through it, start to finish. How long does it run? How many outfit changes? Different backdrops or setups? What’s expected of you as the parent? What will your child be guided to do?
A confident studio can explain this clearly. At POP!, every session has a clear flow — so you know exactly what to expect and can prepare your child for it, rather than sending them in unsure.
3. Who’s actually behind the camera?
Not just the studio name — the person.
Ask who will photograph your child, and how much experience they have with kids specifically. Photographing children is its own skill. It’s not portrait photography with a smaller subject.
Our POP! photographers work with kids every single day, across our Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane studios. They know how to build trust, put a child at ease, and capture real expressions without pressure. Listen to how any studio describes their approach — connection and patience, or just poses and lighting? That difference matters.
4. What will I actually walk away with?
This is where families often get caught out. Ask exactly what’s included. How many images? Digital, prints, or both? What resolution? Are edits included? Any costs after the shoot?
We’re upfront about this at POP! from the first conversation — no surprises after the shoot, no guessing what you’re paying for.
5. Can I see a full session, not just the highlights?
Every studio posts its best shots — that’s normal. But it also means you’re only seeing the highlight reel.
Ask to view a fuller gallery from an actual session, ideally with a child around the same age as yours. It’ll tell you far more about consistency, variety, and what the full experience looks like than five perfect photos ever could.
6. What’s the studio actually like?
Small details matter. Is it warm and welcoming? Enough space to move? Comfortable lighting? Can a parent or sibling stay nearby? Is it built with kids in mind, or is it an adult studio that also takes bookings for children?
Our POP! studios are designed for kids first — plenty of space, a relaxed pace, and parents welcome close by throughout. A child who feels safe and relaxed photographs differently to a child who feels overwhelmed.
7. What happens if today just isn’t the day?
Kids get sick. Kids have meltdowns. Kids suddenly refuse the outfit you packed, or the shoes, or the smile.
That’s just life with kids.
Ask what happens if the session doesn’t go to plan. Can you reschedule? Is there a reshoot option? At POP!, that’s exactly what our Love-It Guarantee is for — if you love fewer than three images from your session, we’ll reshoot it for free. No pressure on your child to get it perfect the first time.
Final thought
A kids photoshoot isn’t just about getting beautiful images. It’s about the experience your child has while you’re creating them.
At POP!, we build every session around making your child feel comfortable, supported, and celebrated — not rushed or pressured to perform.
So before you book anywhere: look past the price list. Pay attention to how the team talks about kids, comfort, and care.
Because the best photos don’t come from good lighting alone. They come from a child who feels safe enough to shine.
