Behind the Scenes: What Really Happens at a Professional Photoshoot

You’ve booked the session. You’ve picked the outfits (three times). You’ve told your mates you’re doing “a professional shoot” and tried to sound casual about it. But now the day is creeping closer and there’s one question circling in your head: what actually happens at a photoshoot?

I’ve been on the POP Photography floor in our Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane studios for years now, and I’ll let you in on a secret — most first-timers walk in expecting something far more intimidating than the reality. The truth is messier, funnier, and honestly a lot more fun than the polished Instagram grids suggest.

So let’s pull back the curtain. This is the honest, unfiltered look at what really happens from the moment you walk through our studio door to the moment your final gallery lands in your inbox. No marketing fluff. No “magical transformation” clichés. Just the real stuff.

What Actually Happens When You Arrive at the Studio?

First things first — nobody’s going to shove a camera in your face the second you walk in. I promise.

When you arrive at one of our POP studios, you’re greeted by a real human being (usually with a coffee or a glass of bubbles in hand, depending on the time of day and your vibe). We’ll take your outfit bag, hang everything up properly so nothing’s creased, and walk you through the space so you know where the bathroom is, where to stash your phone, and where the best natural light pours through our studio windows.

Then we sit down. Yes, actually sit. We chat about why you booked the shoot — is it a milestone birthday? A confidence boost? A gift from your partner? A “treat yourself because you deserve it” moment? Every reason matters, because it changes the way we shoot you.

This first 10 to 15 minutes is arguably the most important part of the whole day. It’s when nerves settle, when we figure out your personality, and when you realise the team isn’t judging you — we’re on your side. By the time you head to the hair and makeup chair, the shaky “what-have-I-done” feeling has usually disappeared.

How Long Does a Photoshoot Really Take?

Here’s something the glossy ads don’t always tell you: a proper professional photoshoot is not a quick 20-minute affair. And that’s a good thing.

At POP, our $99 Signature experience typically runs around 90 minutes to two hours from start to finish. Our $249 Star for a Day package, which includes professional hair and makeup, stretches to roughly three to three-and-a-half hours. That’s not us padding the timeline — that’s what it actually takes to get relaxed, natural, gallery-worthy images.

Here’s roughly how that time breaks down on an average Star for a Day session:

  • 15 minutes — arrival, welcome, outfit review
  • 60–75 minutes — professional hair and makeup
  • 60–75 minutes — the actual shooting across multiple looks and backdrops
  • 20–30 minutes — the image reveal and gallery selection

The “shooting” portion feels the shortest because you’re having so much fun. Clients constantly say, “Wait, that was an hour already?” Yes. Yes, it was. Time genuinely flies when you’re being told you look incredible every thirty seconds (more on that later).

What Goes on During Hair and Makeup?

The hair and makeup chair is where the magic quietly begins — but not in the way you’d think.

Our artists aren’t there to change who you are. They’re not going to give you a full contour and fake lashes if that’s not your thing. Before a single brush comes out, they’ll ask what you like, what you don’t, what you hate about every previous makeup job you’ve ever had, and what level of glam you’re comfortable with. We’ve had clients ask for “barely-there natural” and we’ve had others ask for “full red carpet drama.” Both are valid. Both look incredible on camera.

What most people don’t realise is that professional makeup for photography is different from everyday makeup. Studio lights are unforgiving, and cameras see things your bathroom mirror simply doesn’t. Our artists build in slightly more definition around the eyes, a bit more structure to the cheekbones, and use specific products that photograph without looking cakey or flat. It’s an entirely different craft.

Hair follows the same philosophy. Beachy waves, sleek and polished, big volume, soft and romantic — you’ll flick through a few reference images with the stylist, chat about what works with your face shape, and they’ll build something that holds up for the duration of the shoot.

Oh, and while you’re in the chair? That’s often when you’ll get your second coffee. The whole room usually starts laughing. The playlist’s pumping. You’ll catch yourself thinking, “This is actually… really nice.”

What Does the Photographer Do Between Shots?

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of a shoot. If you watch a professional photographer work, you’ll notice they’re rarely standing still — and they’re rarely silent.

Between clicks of the shutter, your POP photographer is doing about six things at once. They’re checking the back of the camera to review the last frame. They’re subtly adjusting the lighting — maybe nudging a softbox two inches to the left, or tweaking the modifier so the shadow under your jawline softens. They’re watching your shoulders (they drop when you’re nervous), your hands (they tense when you overthink), and your eyes (they tell the whole story).

And they’re talking. Constantly. “Chin down a touch, eyes up to me, now breathe out — beautiful — hold it — yes!” It sounds a bit chaotic written down, but in the room it feels like a dance. Good direction is the difference between a stiff, awkward portrait and an image that looks effortlessly alive.

Between outfit changes, the photographer’s also resetting the scene — swapping backdrops, re-angling the lights for a different mood, sometimes switching lenses entirely. A moody close-up needs a completely different setup from a full-length editorial shot. All of this happens quickly and quietly while you’re changing, so you never feel like you’re waiting around.

The other thing they’re doing? Genuinely, actually having fun. It’s a job, yes, but our photographers love what they do. That energy is contagious — and it’s the reason the images feel warm rather than clinical.

How Do They Decide Which Photos Are ‘The Ones’?

By the end of your shoot, you’ll have had a small army of frames captured — often somewhere in the range of 200 to 400 images, depending on your package and the number of outfit changes.

Obviously, nobody needs 400 photos of themselves. So how do we whittle that down to the knockout keepers?

First, there’s a quick technical cull. Any frame where you blinked, where someone’s hair was mid-flyaway, or where the focus drifted even slightly gets removed. That usually trims things by 30 to 40 per cent straight away.

Then comes the fun bit — the reveal. At POP, we don’t make you wait weeks to see your photos. After a short break while your photographer selects the strongest frames, you’ll sit down with us in front of a big screen and view them together. This is the moment people’s faces light up. It’s also the moment a lot of clients get a bit emotional, because seeing yourself through a professional lens — really seeing yourself — can be surprisingly moving.

We go through them as a team. You pick your favourites. We flag the ones that made us gasp behind the camera. Sometimes there’s debate. (“No, THAT one is the one.”) And together, we land on your final selection — the images that will become your keepsake gallery.

What Happens After the Shoot?

You’d be forgiven for thinking the work stops when you walk out the door. It doesn’t — it just moves to a different room.

After your session, your chosen images head to our editing suite. This isn’t about over-airbrushing you into a stranger. Our retouching philosophy is simple: enhance, don’t erase. We’ll even out skin tones, soften a stray flyaway hair, balance the colour and light, and make sure the image has that clean, professional finish — but the goal is always for you to look at the final photo and think, “Yep, that’s me. On an amazing day.”

We’ll never slim you down, reshape your face, or remove the freckles and lines that make you, you. If you ask us to, we’ll have a chat about it — because often the thing someone wants “fixed” is exactly what makes their portrait beautiful.

Once editing’s done, your gallery is delivered digitally so you can download, share, and print whenever you like. Some clients order framed canvases for the hallway. Some post straight to Instagram. Some keep their favourite tucked quietly on their phone background as a private little confidence boost. All of those are winning uses.

1. Booking and Pre-Shoot Chat

It starts with a click. You book your Signature session or Star for a Day experience online, pick your studio (Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane) and your preferred date. Within a day or two, our team reaches out for a friendly pre-shoot chat — what you’re hoping for, what you’re nervous about, any wardrobe questions. This is where the groundwork is laid.

2. Outfit Planning

We’ll send you a styling guide with what works on camera and what doesn’t (spoiler: tiny patterns and neon aren’t your friends). You’ll typically bring between two and four outfits — think one “hero” look, one casual, and one “wow” piece you’d never normally wear. The ones you’re least sure about are often the ones that steal the show.

3. Arrival and Welcome

You rock up at your studio. You’re offered a drink. You meet the team. The nerves start melting within the first ten minutes. Promise.

4. Hair and Makeup (for Star for a Day Clients)

You settle into the chair and chat with the artist about the look. Around an hour later, you stand up and catch yourself in the mirror — and something shifts. You’re ready.

5. The Shoot Itself

This is the part you’ve been dreading and secretly looking forward to. It flies by. You’ll change outfits two to four times, try different backdrops and lighting setups, and slowly loosen up until the last fifteen minutes are your absolute best (they always are).

6. The Reveal

You sit down, the lights dim slightly, the first image appears on the screen — and you see yourself differently. This is the moment that stays with people long after the shoot ends.

7. Gallery Delivery

Your edited, final images arrive digitally, ready to download, share, print or treasure. You walk away with more than photos — you walk away with proof of a version of yourself you might not have fully seen before.

The POP Photoshoot by the Numbers

For the data nerds among us, here’s what an average day on the POP studio floor actually looks like:

  • Average session length: 90 minutes (Signature) to 3.5 hours (Star for a Day)
  • Images captured per session: 200–400 frames
  • Final edited images delivered: a curated gallery of your chosen favourites
  • Outfit changes: 2 to 4, depending on package and pace
  • Team size on the day: typically 2 to 4 people — photographer, stylist, hair and makeup artist, and studio host
  • Backdrops and lighting setups used: 3 to 6 different looks across one session
  • Cups of coffee consumed (by the client): somewhere between two and “I’ve lost count”

Want to see what these numbers translate to visually? Take a wander through our client gallery and you’ll see the range of real, unretouched-beyond-recognition results from genuine sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not photogenic?

Honestly, “not photogenic” isn’t really a thing — it’s usually code for “I’ve never been photographed by someone who knew how to direct me.” Ninety per cent of a flattering portrait is lighting, angle and guidance. That’s literally our job. We’ve yet to meet the client we couldn’t make look incredible.

Do I need to bring anything?

Your chosen outfits (on hangers if possible), any accessories or jewellery you’d like to wear, and an open mind. Leave the nerves in the car. If you’re doing a Signature shoot without H&M, come with hair and makeup already done the way you’d love it to look on camera.

Can I bring a friend or partner for support?

Absolutely. A lot of clients bring a mum, sister, best mate or partner along for moral support — we welcome it. Some even end up jumping into a few frames at the end. The studio is a relaxed, friendly space, not a sterile clinic.

What’s the difference between the $99 Signature and $249 Star for a Day?

The $99 Signature session is our core professional shoot experience — full photography, multiple outfits, the reveal and gallery. The $249 Star for a Day builds on that with professional hair and makeup by one of our in-house artists included. If you want the full pampering, the HMU experience is worth every cent. You can learn more on our services page.

Will I be pressured to buy extras after the shoot?

No aggressive sales pitches here. We’ll show you the options — prints, frames, digital packages — and you pick what suits you. If you only want your digital gallery, that’s completely fine. We’d rather you leave happy than upsold.

How soon can I see my photos?

At POP, we reveal your images on the same day as your shoot — you don’t wait weeks wondering how it all turned out. Your final edited gallery is then delivered shortly afterwards so you can download, print and share at your leisure.

The Real Secret of a Professional Photoshoot

If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this honest behind-the-scenes peek, it’s this: a professional photoshoot isn’t about the camera, the lights or even the outfits. It’s about the hour or two you spend being fully seen — and enjoying it.

People walk out of our studios with more than a gallery. They walk out standing a little taller. They see themselves slightly differently in the mirror the next morning. They catch themselves smiling at a photo on their phone six months later. That’s the part we can’t really put in a brochure, and it’s the part that keeps us doing what we do.

So if you’ve been wondering what really happens at a photoshoot — now you know. It’s less scary, more fun, and far more rewarding than you’d expect. And if you want to experience it for yourself, we’d love to meet you. Learn more about the team behind POP, or jump straight in and book your session in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane.

Trust us. Future-you is going to be so glad you did.
