Your First Modelling Photoshoot Doesn’t Have to Be Scary
Walking into a photography studio for the first time can feel like a big deal — especially if you’ve never been in front of a professional camera before. But here’s the truth: almost every working model started exactly where you are right now. A little nervous, a little excited, and not entirely sure what to do with their hands.
The good news? With some simple preparation, you can walk into your first session feeling confident and ready to create stunning images. These modelling photoshoot tips come straight from our team at POP Photography, where we’ve photographed thousands of first-timers across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane — and watched them absolutely shine.
What Should You Wear to a Modelling Photoshoot?
Build a Versatile Outfit Selection
Bring more options than you think you’ll need. We recommend three to five outfits that give you a mix of looks — something casual, something a bit more polished, and something that feels like you. Think fitted jeans and a clean top, a simple dress, or a sharp blazer over a plain tee.
Solid colours photograph beautifully. Black, white, cream, olive and rich tones like burgundy or navy tend to look fantastic on camera. Avoid large logos, busy patterns and heavily branded clothing — they date quickly and pull attention away from your face.
Fit Matters More Than Fashion
Clothes that fit well always look better than clothes that are trendy but baggy or too tight. If something needs ironing, iron it. If it pulls oddly when you lift your arms, leave it at home. You want to feel comfortable moving around, because stiff poses come from stiff clothing.
Shoes matter too. Bring a pair of heels if you wear them, clean white sneakers for a casual look, and perhaps ankle boots. Even if your feet aren’t in every shot, the right shoes change how you stand and carry yourself.
How Should You Prepare Your Skin and Hair for a Photoshoot?
Start a Week Before
Great skin on camera starts well before the day itself. In the week leading up to your shoot, drink plenty of water, get decent sleep, and keep your skincare routine consistent. Now is not the time to try a new exfoliating acid or get an aggressive facial — breakouts from new products are the last thing you want.
If you’re prone to dry lips, keep a lip balm handy in the days beforehand. For blokes, decide whether you’re going clean-shaven or keeping facial hair, and groom accordingly the morning of.
Hair: Clean and Workable
Wash your hair the night before or the morning of your shoot. Avoid heavy products like wax or strong-hold gel — you want your hair to move naturally and be easy to restyle between looks. If you’re planning a haircut or colour, book it at least a week ahead so it settles in and looks natural.
At POP Photography, professional hair and makeup is included in our Star for a Day sessions (from $249), while our $99 Signature sessions focus on capturing natural, editorial-quality images, so our stylists will take care of the finishing touches. Just arrive with a clean, well-moisturised base and let them work their magic.
How Do You Pose for a Modelling Photoshoot?
Forget What You’ve Seen on Instagram
The biggest mistake first-timers make is trying to copy poses they’ve seen online. Those shots usually involve experienced models, specific lighting setups, and a fair bit of post-production. Trying to recreate them cold just leads to stiff, awkward images.
Instead, focus on small movements. A slight turn of the chin. Shifting your weight to one hip. Dropping one shoulder. The best poses often come from micro-adjustments rather than dramatic body contortions.
Let Your Photographer Guide You
A good photographer will direct you through every shot. They’ll tell you where to look, how to angle your body, and when to move. Your job isn’t to arrive with a memorised catalogue of poses — it’s to listen, respond, and stay relaxed.
That said, it does help to practise a few basics in front of a mirror beforehand. Get comfortable with your angles. Most people have a side they prefer, and knowing yours saves time on the day.
Movement Creates Energy
Some of the strongest shots happen mid-movement — walking towards the camera, turning to look over your shoulder, adjusting your jacket. Don’t be afraid to move between poses. Static shots have their place, but movement brings life to a set of images.
What Happens on the Day of Your Modelling Photoshoot?
If you’ve booked a Signature Session with us, here’s a rough idea of how the day flows. You’ll arrive at the studio, meet your photographer and stylist, and have a quick chat about what looks you’re going for. Then it’s into hair and makeup while you settle in and relax.
The actual shooting part usually goes faster than people expect. Once you’re in front of the camera and warmed up, the time flies. We keep the energy upbeat, the music going, and the direction constant — nobody gets left standing there wondering what to do.
After the shoot, you’ll have a reveal session where you get to see your images and select your favourites. This is genuinely one of the best parts — watching someone see themselves in a completely new way never gets old.
How Do You Work With a Photographer at a Modelling Shoot?
Communication Is Everything
Tell your photographer if something feels uncomfortable. Tell them if you hate your profile from a certain angle. Tell them if you want to try something specific. The best sessions are collaborative — your photographer brings technical skill and creative direction, and you bring your personality and energy.
Trust the Process
There will be moments during the shoot where you feel a bit silly. Maybe you’re doing a pose that feels exaggerated, or the photographer asks you to do something unexpected. Trust them. What feels over-the-top in person often looks brilliant on camera. The gap between how a pose feels and how it looks is bigger than you’d expect.
How Do You Get the Most From Your Modelling Photoshoot?
Here are some quick, practical modelling photoshoot tips that make a real difference:
- Arrive on time. Late arrivals eat into your shooting time, and rushing through hair and makeup shows in the photos.
- Eat beforehand. Low blood sugar makes you tired, unfocused and pale. Have a proper meal a couple of hours before.
- Bring a friend if it helps. Some people shoot better with a mate nearby for moral support. Others find it distracting. Know which one you are.
- Stay off your phone. Once the session starts, be present. You’ll get better images when you’re fully engaged.
- Have fun with it. Seriously. The shoots where people enjoy themselves always produce the strongest work.
One thing that sets POP Photography apart is our guarantee of magazine publication. Every client has the opportunity to be featured in a published editorial — something no other studio in Australia offers. It’s a genuine credential for your portfolio and a brilliant conversation starter with agencies.
What Comes After Your First Modelling Photoshoot?
A professional photoshoot is often the first step towards something bigger. Many of our clients go on to sign with agencies after building a strong portfolio with us. If you’re interested in representation, our sister companies Bubblegum Casting (for kids and teens) and Hunter Talent (for adults) are always scouting for fresh faces — and having professional, editorial-quality images puts you well ahead of the crowd.

Your Week-by-Week Photoshoot Preparation Timeline
Feeling a little overwhelmed about what to do before your shoot day? Don’t stress — we’ve broken it down into a simple countdown so you can walk into the studio feeling calm, prepared and ready to shine. Follow these seven steps and you’ll be amazed at how much smoother the whole experience feels.
1. Two Weeks Before — Lock In Your Booking and Plan Your Outfits
Start by confirming your session type — whether that's our $99 Signature session where you'll bring your own looks, or our $249 Star for a Day package which includes professional hair and makeup. Pull together three to five outfits that show different sides of your personality: a clean casual look, something smart, and a standout piece with colour or texture. Lay them out, try them on, and check for stains, loose threads or ironing that needs doing. Browse our gallery for outfit inspiration.
2. One Week Before — Focus on Skincare and Hydration
Your skin is your best accessory, so give it some love this week. Drink plenty of water every day (aim for two litres), cut back on salty foods and alcohol, and stick to your normal skincare routine. Now is not the time to try a brand new face mask or exfoliant — your skin might react, and we want you glowing, not blotchy. Get to bed at a reasonable hour and keep stress low where you can.
3. Three Days Before — Wash Your Hair and Double-Check Everything
Wash your hair two to three days before the shoot rather than on the morning of. Freshly washed hair can be slippery and hard to style, whereas day-two hair holds shape beautifully. Do a final outfit check: try everything on with the shoes and accessories you plan to wear, and make sure nothing pinches, rides up or shows visible bra straps. Charge your phone and save the studio address.
4. The Day Before — Nails, Bags and an Early Night
Give your nails a tidy-up — a neutral polish or a simple buff works beautifully on camera. Pack your bag the night before with all your outfits (on hangers, not folded), shoes, accessories, a water bottle and a light snack. Set out what you’re wearing to the studio. Then switch off, have a relaxing evening and get a solid eight hours of sleep. Rest shows on camera more than any product ever could.
5. The Morning Of — Eat Well and Arrive Early
Start your day with a proper breakfast — something with protein and slow-release carbs like eggs on toast or porridge with fruit. Avoid anything too salty or sugary. Arrive fifteen minutes early so you have time to settle in, hang up your outfits and chat with your photographer before we begin. If you’ve booked Star for a Day, our hair and makeup artist will take care of your glam on arrival.
6. During the Shoot — Trust Your Photographer
This is the bit everyone worries about, and it’s the bit you truly don’t need to. Our photographers guide you through every pose, every angle and every expression. You don’t need modelling experience — you just need to show up and be yourself. Laugh, have fun, and take a deep breath between outfit changes. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will look.
7. After the Shoot — Prepare for Your Reveal Session
Once your shoot wraps, we’ll book you in for your reveal session a week or two later. This is where you get to see your gallery on the big screen and choose your favourite images. Come with an open mind, and if you’d like, bring a family member or friend whose opinion you trust. Think beforehand about how you’d like to use your photos — prints, digital files, a portfolio — so you can make the most of your reveal.
Frequently Asked Questions About Modelling Photoshoots
How long does a POP Photography session take?
A Signature session runs for around 60 to 90 minutes of shooting time. A Star for a Day session takes closer to two and a half hours in total, because you’ll also have professional hair and makeup beforehand. You can view all session options on our services page.
Should I do my own hair and makeup?
If you’ve booked a $99 Signature session, yes — come camera-ready with your own hair and makeup done as you’d normally wear it for a nice event. If you’ve booked the $249 Star for a Day package, our professional artist will do it all for you on the day, so you can arrive with a clean face and freshly washed (dry) hair.
What if I've never posed for photos before?
Most of our clients haven’t, and that’s completely fine. Our photographers are experts at directing first-timers, and we’ll guide you through every pose and expression. You don’t need experience — just bring yourself.
Can I bring someone with me to the shoot?
Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring a parent, partner or friend along for moral support. We do ask that only one support person comes into the studio so the space stays calm and focused on you.
How many photos will I get from my session?
We typically capture between 150 and 300 images during a session. At your reveal, you’ll see around 30 to 50 of the very best edited images to choose from.
What happens at the reveal session?
Your reveal is a separate appointment where you’ll view your images on a large screen in the studio. We’ll walk you through your gallery, help you narrow down your favourites and chat through the different product and digital options available.
What to Expect at a Professional Modelling Photoshoot
Knowing what the numbers look like can take a lot of the mystery out of your first shoot. On average, a POP Photography session runs between 60 and 150 minutes depending on the package you’ve chosen, with most clients completing three to five outfit changes across that time. Our photographers capture anywhere from 150 to 300 frames per session, giving you plenty of variety when it comes time to choose your favourites.
If you’re feeling nervous, you’re in very good company. Around 85% of our first-time clients tell us they felt anxious before arriving at the studio — and more than 95% of those same clients say they felt completely at ease within the first ten minutes of shooting. It really is the hardest part that’s already behind you once you walk through the door.
At the reveal stage, roughly 9 in 10 clients choose to take home a selection of their images, whether as digital files, prints or a combination of both. Our team is on hand to help you pick the looks that suit your goals, whether that’s a modelling portfolio, an updated profile picture or a beautiful keepsake from the experience.
