Family photo pricing in Australia is confusing by design — every studio structures it differently, and the headline price rarely tells you what you’ll actually spend. Here’s how the models work, what the numbers mean, and the questions worth asking any studio (including us) before you book.
The three pricing models you’ll meet
1. All-inclusive packages
One price covers the session and a fixed set of images. Simple, but you’re paying upfront for images you haven’t seen, and the package size rarely matches what you actually love.
2. Hourly or day-rate photographers
Common with on-location solo photographers. You pay for time, then usually receive a gallery of digital files. Quality varies enormously, and editing depth is where budgets quietly get trimmed.
3. Session fee + collections (the reveal model)
A smaller fee covers the shoot itself, then you view your finished images at a reveal session and buy only the collection you want. This is how most dedicated portrait studios work — including POP! — because it means you choose images you’ve actually seen, finished, on a big screen.
What actually drives the cost
- Editing and retouching — the difference between a raw file and a wall-worthy image is hours of work per image
- Studio, lighting and equipment — controlled studio light is a real cost, and the reason studio prints look the way they do
- Products — professional wall art, framing and albums are lab-made, not chemist prints
- The photographer’s time beyond the shoot — preparation calls, session planning, reveal sessions
How POP! prices family sessions
We run the session fee + collections model, with one rule: you see all pricing before you book. Your session fee covers the shoot, your private reveal and a printed keepsake. Image collections are purchased at your reveal — and we send the full collection price list to every family before booking, so nothing catches you off guard. Questions to ask any studio before booking
- What exactly does the session fee include?
- Will I see full product/collection pricing before I book?
- Are images professionally edited before I view them?
- Is there pressure to buy on the day, or can I choose at a reveal?
- Who actually shoots my session, and do they photograph families every week?
Any studio that won’t answer all five in writing is telling you something.
